Using therapy to explore feelings around adoption, fertility or other medical issues

It is often when people are seeking reunion with birth families, or have already been reunited with a member of their birth family, that they feel the need to look at their feelings in a safe environment.

Government statistics show that about one in five adoptive placements break down. These disruptions lead to a wide spectrum of feelings both immediately and in the long term. In these circumstances both adopters and those who were adopted and have now reached adulthood may feel the need to explore their perception of the disruption.

Difficulties in conceiving or sustaining pregnancies, or gaining awareness that conception is not advisable or not possible can cause individuals and couples to re-evaluate their lives. Fertility treatment can be physically and psychologically draining, and some couples and individuals find it hard to know or agree the best time to abandon the process. I offer therapeutic support to those who need a place to look at the conflicted feelings that can arise in these situations.

I can help people explore their feelings when they or someone close to them have been given a life changing diagnosis.

I work therapeutically with people who have issues around food and eating.

I undertake long term analytic work up to three times a week with people who wish to explore their feelings in depth over a period of more than a year. Sometimes people find that when they have sought support for a single perceived problem that they uncover other aspects of their life and relationships which they would like to understand better.

We can discuss what kind of therapy you are hoping for when we meet initially. See the 'Contact' page for more details.
