Including people considering adoption, individuals and couples.
I offer a space for adopted adults to explore their feelings if they are seeking reunion with their birth families, or if they have already sought out birth relatives and are struggling with the emotional consequences. The work of tracing birth relatives is undertaken by specialist social workers; I can direct individuals to a suitable department if they wish.
Birth Mothers and Birth Fathers
Mothers who have relinquished their children, either recently or in the past, may experience a sense of conflict. This may be following reunion with the relinquished child, or simply be at a point in their lives where they would like to revisit the effects of the decision. Many feel that they had no choice, and may retain anger towards people who were party to their decision. I can offer a space to explore and articulate feelings. In addition, fathers whose partner relinquished a child may never have had the opportunity to articulate how they feel about their own loss.
I undertake work (usually short term) for Local Authority Adoption Agencies, with adopters, adoptees, with relinquishing birth mothers and also with contemporary birth mothers.
Acknowledging that some of those individuals find it difficult to travel, or are better served being seen in Local Authority premises, I can arrange to travel myself for sessions.
I accept referrals for brief private work with individuals and couples seeking to adopt who may want to explore ambivalence during the assessment process.
